OpenTV and Spyglass Announce Merger

OpenTV and Spyglass have announced a definitive merger agreement. The merger combines a leading provider of interactive television with a leading provider of Internet services and related products.

At a press conference held today, President and CEO of OpenTV, Jan Steenkamp, said that combining the two companies will allow OpenTV to provide “a compelling array of software solutions and services to network operators, broadcasters, wireless operators and manufacturers at a time when digital interactive television and broadband Internet connectivity are rapidly becoming a reality around the world.”

Steenkamp also said that the combination of Spyglass’ Mosaic technology and the coming of age of the broadband market, will allow OpenTV to expand their interactivity to include such online functions as Web browsing, e-mail, white and yellow pages, chat and shopping.

The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and the approval of the stockholders of both companies, and is expected to close within three to four months.
