iTV - Previously Slow to Grow, But Big Numbers Still Predicted

Though some major players acknowledge that interactive television growth has taken longer than they had hoped, experts still expect a major iTV upswing over the next four years. Some of the momentum in interactive services will be fueled by the widespread use of digital cable and increases in open access set-top boxes as a result of the OpenCable initiative.

Several research firms predict the same rosy picture.

Broadband Intelligence predicted that iTV, in about 200,000 homes at the end of 2000, would hit 1.5 million at the end of this year, 4.7 million in 2003 and 8.3 million in 2004.

International Data Corp. anticipates iTV operations will increase by 10 times by 2004, and Forrester Research forecasted 87 million homes would use interactive program guides, and 65 million homes would participate in interactive programming by 2005.
