TiVo co-founder, Jim Martin, announced “Series 2″ Tiv
o PVRs at a CES press conference. He said the company intends to make Series 2, itself built on Linux code, the “first TV platform” and to open its source code to third-party developers. Series 2 PVRs will have inputs for home network devices, CD players, Memory Sticks and cameras. These boxes will carry Internet Radio channels, will be able to download music files, rip and burn CDs through the RealOne jukebox and run games such as those provided by partner, Jellyvision. Broadband Internet users will be able to access a “Video on Demand” service that will allow downloads of movies and TV programs fom certain providers (Mr. Martin mentioned HBO as a prospective provider) for playback at a later time.
