Samsung Digital Set-Top & Liberate Software Enables Delivery of Interactive Digital Video

SINGAPORE, BroadcastAsia 2002, June 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Liberate Technologies and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today unveiled an integrated digital set-top supporting MPEG over IP based delivery of interactive video programs, content and services for DSL-based Telco networks. Based on Liberate TV Navigator 4.0 software, Samsung plans on offering the SMT-F240 to network operator customers worldwide later this year. The demonstration is being shown in the Liberate booth at BroadcastAsia 2002 from June 18-21.


The SMT-F240 incorporates National Semiconductor’s x86-based Geode CPU running at 266MHz. The digital set-top is utilizing the Linux operating system. The set-top on display at BroadcastAsia supports MPEG 2 and can be upgraded upon network operator requirements to support MPEG 4.

The Liberate/Samsung demo highlights:
— Video-on-demand: the latest developments in VOD enabling network
operators to provide movies, advertisements, and other video services
on demand.
— Music eTV application: music application developed in cooperation with
content aggregator Signatures Network and iTV developer Massive
Interactive combining a video jukebox with virtual TV channels that
deliver on-demand content featuring popular music artists.
— Games: several interactive games highlighting the options available on
the digital set-top.
— Bi-lingual Tickers: provide real-time information updates such as
scores, news headlines, sports information and statistics and allows
the viewer to toggle between English and Chinese.
— A prototype walled garden and video preview service will be shown in
Japanese.
