Sony “Cocoon” PVR Makes Splash in Japan

by Charles Fulton, Associate Editor

Sony has previewed “Cocoon”, a hard drive recorder that can record 15 hours of high-definition programming or 100 hours of standard-definition programming. The unit will also have a broadband connection for gathering program data. The Cocoon will also be able to recommend programming that it believes its owner will enjoy based on past selections.

Another unique feature the Cocoon offers is the ability to be programmed by a user’s cell phone, available for an optional service fee.

All this power won’t be cheap, though–the Cocoon will sell for 130,000 Yen (approx. US $1,100.) The product is slated for launch in Japan this November. No plans have been announced for a rollout into any other countries at this time.
